About

In my work, I explore how people relate to the body and its functions. Coming from a medical background, I look at health and its emotional and societal weight. I also comment on how society views and judges biological variation and differences. Drawing on my experiences growing up significantly taller than my peers, I like to play with scale to find just what about proportions draws the attention of others and causes discomfort or awe. We are a judgmental society that celebrates some differences and shames others. I look to explore that boundary and what it’s like to live on the side that isn’t accepted or met with societal resistance.

I work primarily with sculpture, focusing on metal, found-object, and casting. I prefer stable and static materials since my work is very detail-oriented. Objects with emotional weight relating to the body interest me, such as medical supplies, toiletries, and medications, the things that everyone uses but no one wants to admit they use. While some works do get put in public places and specific sites, my art is intended for a gallery or museum setting, where people can ponder the relationship of the objects and their bodies. The blankness of galleries allow isolation with the sculpture and draws interesting interaction between its traditionally “high art” environment and the personal materials. I draw influence from the abstract steel behemoths of Richard Serra and his focus on abstract and fluid form, the sound suits and creative process of Nick Cave, and the emotionally striking found-object installations of Doris Salcedo.

During Quarantine I've been rediscovering my love for printmaking and traditional mediums, and exploring what it means to be a first responder during a worldwide pandemic.
